There is some very special candy coming to Ye Olde Pepper Companie candy shop at 59 Main St. in North Andover,
and some very special salespeople will be selling it.
Willy Wonka and a bunch of Oompa Loompas from the Acting Out Theater Company will be selling big chocolate
bars created by the venerable downtown candy shop at the corner of Waverly and Main Street to promote their December production
of “Willy Wonka: The Musical.”
Five of Acting Out’s “Chocolate Scrumptious Bars,” created by the Ye Olde Pepper Companie,
will have a golden ticket inside. The lucky winners of the golden tickets will get the opportunity to appear with Willy and
the Oompa Loompas in a performance of the show, to be held Dec. 12-14 at the Andover Old Town Hall.
In the meantime, visitors to the North Andover Ye Olde Pepper Companie candy shop will have the chance to
meet Willy Wonka on Oct. 18, Nov. 8 and Nov. 22, from 1-2 p.m.
Golden ticket winners will get cameo roles in the show, joining the cast of 100 Merrimack Valley children
and adults who have been rehearsing this musical extravaganza. Profits from the $2 candy bars will help the nonprofit Acting
Out Theater Company meet its operating expenses.
The special bars are milk-chocolate-covered graham cracker, and have been described by Acting Out director
Linda Schoonmaker as a “scrumdidilyumptious” candy delight.
Entering its eighth season of encouraging novices to try their hands at theater, the Acting Out Theater Company
has produced impressive performances at the hands of Schoonmaker and fellow director Penny Kohut.
For the upcoming “Willy Wonka: The Musical,” Dave Cook of Methuen is creating the role of Willy
Wonka, joined by Carolyn Noyes and John Boudreau sharing the role of Charlie Bucket, Ben Gleed and Griffin Barber sharing
the role of Augustus Gloop, Scott Jackson and Ben Gallahue sharing the role of Mike Teevee, Mackenzie Barber and Lauren Wanthal
sharing the role of Violet Beauregarde, and Linea Schulz and Jessica Carroll sharing the role of Veruca Salt.
Numerous other talented folks are in the cast along with a huge number of crazy Oompa Loompas.
With its flagship and original shop in Salem, Ye Olde Pepper Companie candy shop is known as America’s
oldest candy company. The original company was formed in 1806.
At the North Andover shop on Wednesday, a customer came in and said, “I’ll have my usual.”
The “usual” turned out to be some dark chocolate nougatines for the woman’s mother-in-law.
The candy store is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is full of fudge, taffy, nuts,
milk chocolate cigars and many other interesting old-fashioned candies.
